It turns out architectural decontamination may start with the baby diaper. Science News reports that hydrocolloidal gels, like those found in low-leak diapers, are being adapted for much, much larger-scale purposes. A coat of this substance could be applied in volume to buildings exposed to radiation unleashed in dirty-bomb or conventional nuclear attacks. The gel would absorb radiological traces, then get hoovered up and disposed. The tests so far seem to be working well on surfaces with the porosity of marble, tile, and concrete.
It’s a lot tougher to clean brick, which is bad news for almost any neighborhood on the Eastern seaboard.
