A sublime gesture in the urban context

May 10, 2009

One of Joshua Allen Harris’s mylar installations in Manhattan in 2008. A sublime gesture in (and about) the urban context.

  1. Are those mylar “space blankets” over hot subway grates? If so, is this supposed to be a comment about the people who have to sleep on the grates to keep warm, and how those mylar blankets get handed out to them all winter? Like they hand them to marathoners at the finish line. That was the first thing I thought about when I watched the video.

  2. I think they are, and Harris’s other materials include trash bags. Could be an overall commentary on street life, but I think these are prime materials because they are light and durable. I can’t find any commentary by Harris about his views on this.
